The main objective of the course is to introduce students with the process of creating architectural forms and development of settlements in the context of medieval civilizations. The specific objective of the course is to develop skills and knowledge for the application of specific medieval creative ideas and construction techniques in contemporary architecture.
Basic knowledge of architectural types, construction structures, construction techniques and stylistic features of buildings in the Middle Ages. Knowledge of the principles and processes of settling in Europe from V to XV century, as well as types of settlements whose parts are preserved in the tissue of modern settlements.
Religious context of the architecture and towns; Medieval society, culture, aesthetics and their influence on the architectural programs and the settlement concept; Early Christian and Byzantine architecture and its impact; Development of medieval architecture in Western Europe (pre-Romanesque, Romanesque and Gothic architecture); Marginal areas of Europe and their impact on the architecture and urban planning; Profane architecture and fortifications; The genesis and development of medieval settlement; Typology of urban elements; Identification of medieval parts of the urban matrix in modern settlements
