Course specification

Course is active from 01.10.2013..

During this course, the students will gain knowledge on contemporary theoretical and methodological approaches to studying urban transformations in the period of transition, with the aim of identifying the impact of socio-spatial restructuring on city’s cultural and social functions. Themes relevant to these processes will be presented through several case studies, e. g. critical analysis and evaluation of the causes and/or projection of their positive and negative effects. The main objective of the course is to provide a better understanding of the interdependence between socio-economic transition and urban development, by taking into account cultural, social and spatial implications of these processes. This approach would also provide an adequate methodological and practical framework for planning and management of urban transformations.
The students who successfully fulfill their responsibilities will be equipped with skills of analytical and critical thinking, enabling them to critically analyze causes and consequences of the transitional processes in the context of cultural, social and spatial changes on the city level. They will also gain theoretical and practical competencies that are important for establishing an interdisciplinary model of continuous and active cooperation in defining criteria and guidelines for long-term planning and successful implementation of city’s socio-spatial transformations during the period of transition.
